As part of our ongoing support with local community groups in the greater Peterborough area, we’re always more than willing to help where we can. We recently received a request from Dean Eardley, on behalf of the Voyager Academy, based in central Peterborough.
His aim was to have some PPE supplied, namely ear and eye protection for the new Voyager Academy Air Rifle Target Shooting Club. We were more than pleased to help with this excellent project. Since the 2012 London Olympics, there has been greater focus on the up and coming generations of youngsters, and we’re proud to be partnering up with the Voyager Academy to help inspire their next generation of sportsmen and women in achieving their goals.

“I would like to thank Mammoth Workwear for the safety equipment which was very kindly sponsored to The Voyager Academy Air Rifle Target Shooting Club.
I work at the Voyager Academy in Peterborough, I am a DofE Leader a combined Cadet Force Instructor and a Qualified Nation Small-bore Rifle YPS instructor. I am starting an Air Rifle Club here at Voyager Academy and so far have managed to secure sponsorship from BSA, and local companies in order to make this happen.
I have no budget and I have personally funded the majority of this project. BSA have supported by means of the air rifles which cost over £1500 and local builders and business supported with Materials for the backstop and pellet catchers.
Your sponsorship will make it safer for the students participating and with this we are now ready to launch the Club. If not for the support of Mammoth Workwear and our other sponsors it would not have been possible.
PPE and safety is very important and as such I required some safety glass in case of ricochet and Ear defenders as a precaution and for those with sensitive ears.

ting you in the eye, the pellets are not traveling at great speed or force so the glasses will not take too much of an impact. The risk is low but I felt it was still well worth a safety measure of wearing glasses to be appropriate for youngsters.

Work gloves are essential when working with hazardous materials or in environments where you could damage your hands or lack sufficient grip protecting your hands against damage and contamination is very important.
There are many chemicals that will cause damage or invoke an allergic reaction if they come into contact directly with your skin. Some more poisonous and toxic chemicals can even be absorb through the skin, and this could lead to serious complications such as skin infections, skin cancers or dermatitis.

Working alongside sources of heat and open flames, and environments where you can be exposed to sources of ignition, sparks and electric arc – your hands will benefit from specifically designed work gloves to protect from these hazards. Medical and Food Contamination Work Gloves
Gloves used for both medical and food industries are usually made from a nytrile material, and are designed to be single use, disposed of after a shift to reduce the risk of cross contamination. Cut protection Gloves
Working with machinery that has moving mechanic parts, and sharp tools such as saws and nails – your hands need to be protected against cuts, abrasion and punctures. Job roles which may see these hazards include manufacturing, engineering and woodworkers. Cut protection will only offer so much protection however, and when working with chainsaws, you will need specially reinforced gloves designed for this purpose. Chainsaw gloves differ to regular cut resistant work gloves which offers its protection by the fabric its manufactured from, offering improved tensile strength which is more than enough to keep the hands safe from the majority of cut an abrasion hazards. Anti-vibration Gloves
Many industrial and construction workers work with machinery and heavy power tools such as jack hammers and pneumatic drills, where they can be exposed to intense and prolonged vibration. Over time this exposure can lead to a loss of feeling in the fingers and decreased dexterity, contributing to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and hand-arm vibration syndrome. When its time to face the elements, it’s always important that your work clothing can offer you the right level of protection. When it comes to rain, you’re going to want to take advantage of clothing which is fully waterproof. Not to be confused with products that are water resistant or water repellent – fully waterproof work clothing meets EN343 standard, and differs from its counterparts, in terms of how it keeps you protected.
Water resistant clothing is able to resist penetration from water exposure to a certain extent, but will not be effective in heavy foul weather conditions, whereas products which are repellent are not so easily penetrated under exposure to water, and are usually hydrophobic in nature. Repellent products will usually be treated to bead water off of the surface, but water can still get into certain areas such as seams, zips and pockets.
Products which fall into the EN 343 foul weather protection category, are defined by two attributes –

These values are split into three classes from 1 through to 3, and accompany the EN343 pictograph as illustrated:

As with all types of protective clothing, EN 343 certified waterproof clothing garments should be looked after in the correct manner, in order to maintain their protective qualities. For maximum effectiveness you must always ensure that the products are well fitted and closed fully to reduce any chance of water penetration, and that the fabric itself is kept clean, as dirt can negatively impact the effectiveness of the protection. It’s always important that foul weather protective clothing and accessories are stored in dry and well ventilated areas. As with all clothes, it is also recommended to follow any fabric care instructions applicable to individual items, to help further maintain their protective qualities.

Construction and Site Safety
When working on construction and building sites, there are a multitude of hazards and safety standards which must be adhered to in order to provide you with adequate protection.
For most sites, EN471 high visibility clothing is necessary, as this will improve your visual presence on site with its combination of fluorescent fabrics and reflective striping details. High vis clothing covers a wide breadth of products – from t-shirts and sweaters, to trousers, jackets and overalls. As with tradeswomen, a general requirement for most building sites is the need for protective safety footwear, usually above ankle styles are preferred as this will offer you far better support around the ankles in addition to the puncture and impact protection they provide.
Additionally there are an extensive range of supplementary PPE products and accessories available, which vary from site to site and the specific role and responsibilities. You may also find that some sectors also require specialist high vis clothing which conforms to GO/RT standard – this mainly applies to road and trackside jobs.

Children in Need – a brief history
The original Children in Need logo from 1986.
The BBC first appealed for children via a five minute radio broadcast, which went out on Christmas Day all the way back in 1927! The campaign was a great success, and raised a total of £1,143 18s 3d – doesn’t seem much by todays standards, but it is actually the equivalent of £461,500 in todays money!
That money was split between four prominent children’s charities.
The first televised appeal would have to wait another 28 years, when the Children’s Hour Christmas Appeal was televised in 1955 – presented by Harry Corbett and Sooty. These televised appeals continued up until 1979. Over that time, there were a number of people who got involved with presenting – Terry Hall, Aemonn Andrews, Leslie Crowther, Michael Aspel – and one of the emerging talents fresh from BBC Radio 2, a man by the name of Terry Wogan.
In 1980, the BBC decided to broadcast in their newly conceived “Telethon” format – which revolutionised the format of the broadcast, which helped to increase donations over previous years.
Who is Pudsey?

Pudsey is the mascot of Children in Need cause, and he made his television debut in 1985, and was introduced by Terry Wogan. The initial design was a cute, fuzzy brown bear created by a BBC graphics designer named Joanna Ball, naming him after the West Yorkshire town Pudsey, near Bradford and Leeds.
The popularity of this new character was unprecedented, and the following year Pudsey returned as the official logo of BBC Children in Need, albeit in a revised format which is more in line with the character we know today – a yellow bear with a red spotted bandage. This design remained practically the same up until 2007 when he was given a slight makeover for the telethons 28th anniversary.
